On Sunday morning, February 11, 2018 in the Holy Metropolitan Church of Virgin Mary the Spilaiotissa, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did Episcopal Divine Liturgy with glorification for the memory of co-protector of Corfu, Saint Theodora the Empress and Saint Vlasios. The loaves and the cheimonika (watermelons of the winter) were also blessed in honor of Saint Vlasios who treated patients with them.
In his speech, the Bishop of Corfu referred initially to the Gospel reading of the day, noting that the question of the beyond, of the condition after death, always humiliated humans, who facing with existential problems, they reconsider both their previous thoughts and their attitude in general.
Criteria on the Judgement Day, as we hear from the Lord’s unyielding mouth, will be love and faith. Humans on their own will judge and check themselves on how much they have loved Christ and their fellow brothers. The greatest sin is the obsession on making sins, as our Father of Faith mention. When humans serve God and their fellow brothers, they have strong faith in their hearts and they defeat their ultimate enemy, death.
Moreover, his Eminence emphasized that Saint Theodora even if she had the power of an empress, she served the passion of her soul, Jesus Christ along with people. She became a mother who affectionately showed the way both to her biological children and her spiritual ones to the road of Grace and Sanctification. The elements that distinguished Saint Theodora were the wholehearted love and faith. She lived in a time similar to today, where the Church of Christ is being persecuted.
Finally, Mr. Nektarios wished that Saint Theodora the Empress and Saint Vlasios will bless through their prayers and provide with light the life of the faithful Christians in every good work.
By the end of the Divine Liturgy, his Eminence ordained as a Protopresbyter father Georgios Bogdanos, co-priest of the Metropolitan Church of Corfu.
