On Thursday, September 27, 2018, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the memorial service for the soul’s rest of the First Governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, in the Holy Monastery of Virgin Mary the Platytera, where his tomb is, upon the completion of 187 years from his assassination (September 27th 1831). The Ecclesiastical Part of the Choir of Corfu under the direction of Mr. Michalis Kapodistrias sung in the memorial service. Present were also, the Vice Regional Governor, Ms. Nikoletta Pandi, the Vice President of Education of the Municipality of Corfu, Mr. Stamatios Apergis, the Regional Director of Education of the Ionian Islands, Mr. Kostas Gkousis, Regional and Municipal Councilors, along with students of Corfu’s schools, with their teachers.
In his speech, his Eminence praised the personality of the first Governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, who was a faithful Orthodox Christian. He also offered much to our almost ruined homeland after 400 years of the Turkish occupation, in the fields of Education, Public Administration and our Church. Ioannis Kapodistrias believed that people cannot leave without education, history and spiritual support. In his short governing, he established the foundation of modern Greece. Now, after so many years, history comes to honour and reveal Kapodistrias.
Moreover, Mr. Nektarios wished that Lord will distinct people like Ioannis Kapodistrias who will asseverate proudly their Orthodox Faith and will constantly work without fear for the best interest of Greece.
Following his speech, talked Mr. Konstantinos Vergos, headmaster of the 2nd Professional High School.
Lastly, the Memorial Service was sung by the Bishop of Corfu in the Governor’s tomb.
