Priest Ordination in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu

On Monday morning, August 13, 2018, his Eminence the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Matin and the Divine Liturgy in the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker. He also ordained to a priest the deacon father Angelos Kontoutsis.

In his speech, father Angelos firstly thanked most importantly Jesus Christ who with his crucifixion saved the human race from death and sin. Father Angelos thanked also his Eminence for his paternal love and care, along with his spiritual father Archimandrite father Polykarpos Zervos, Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Virgin Mary the Kassopitra, the Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis, Archimandrite father Ioustinos Konstantas, as well as his relatives and family.

Moreover, father Angelos underlined the most important parts of his life and ended his speech with the Gospel’s reading on the Second Coming, where every human will justify his/her acts in front of the just Lord. The criterion will be the love and the offering both to God and to fellow people. These two elements, a priest has to do when ordained.

Following his speech, the Bishop of Corfu pointed out once more the importance of Priesthood that consists the most important gift of the Triune God to humans, since the latter lends his whole existence to the Creator of this world.

Furthermore, Mr. Nektarios stressed three elements that should characterize the life of a Priest. Firstly, the consistency of his words and actions, secondly the stable faith and his heart to be set on fire with the love for Christ while last but not least the spirit of sacrifice. Of this sacrificial spirit, we are all witnesses, when we see the Holy Relic of Saint Spyridon. He sacrificed himself both for God and for his fellow people and thus, he continues to pray eternally for us to our Lord.

In his closing, Mr. Nektarios warned father Angelos that he takes on a great responsibility of  being the shepherd of human souls in a time period full of atheism, unfaithfulness and lack of spiritual orientation The modern Priest is invited to pray and with God’s Grace to go beyond all these difficulties and lead people to their union with Jesus Christ, through the embassies of our Lady Theotokos and Saint Spyridon.
