On Saturday morning, January 6, 2018, Theophany was celebrated with particular glory in Corfu, where his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in the Holy Metropolitan Church of Virgin Mary the Spilaiotissa.
In his preaching, Mr. Nektarios noted that the Triadic God was revealed to humans through the baptism of our Lord in Jordan River. Saint Gregory of Nyssa points out that as Devil fights God through humans, so God beats Devil by coming to this world and taking human flesh.
Moreover, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, continued the Bishop of Corfu, when interpreting Saint Paul, mentions that the Word could not take any other form than the human one in order to sacrifice Himself and then arisen from the dead. If, for example, the Son took the form of an Angel, He could neither sacrifice Himself nor redeem humans from their sins. “For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.” Humans who were condemned to death, now rise, just like Jesus Christ, from water to the sky.
By the end of the Divine Liturgy, Mr. Nektarios did the Blessing of the Waters in the church and then did the second Blessing of the Waters in the old port of Corfu, with the presence of the island’s political and military forces along with a great number of people.
In his short speech, his Eminence underlined the fact that God showed us the road of humbleness, by taking the human form while choosing humbleness. The modern humans show their selfishness and self-conceit. The tragic results of these two make us all suffer. Thus, we are encouraged to live this life with humbleness and repentance, added in the end, Mr. Nektarios.
