Why is God hiding? On Wednesday afternoon, May, 9, 2018 the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, in collaboration with the Association of Christian Scientists of Corfu Prefecture organized an event entitled “Why is God hiding?, at the Spiritual Centre, with speaker Protopresbyter father Charalambos Papadopoulos, known from the internet under the name “father Libyos”, who serves in Crete, on the occasion of his book.

The event was prolonged by Protopresbyter father Themistoklis Mourtzanos, General Prelatic Warden of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, after having conveyed the paternal wishes of His Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, who is in Athens due to his Synodic obligations. Both Fr. Themistoklis and Fr. Charalambos thanked his Eminence for his blessing.

Father Charalambos stressed the need to show trust in God’s will, not to be people who ask for certainty through faith, but to trust Christ. God can speak through a prolonged silence, through people, through tribulations. He who is determined to trust the will of God, to love Christ, to respond to His own love, knows and waits.

The second element to which Fr. Charalambos stood relates to the fact that through our relationship with God and the life of the Church, the Christian can in fact make both his/her own life and that of other people more joyful, more optimistic, more dynamic. All this is not in the context of a utility, as the people demand from the Church in our times, but in the context of a relationship. The relationship of human with Christ and their fellow people precedes and follows everything else. We usually put our demands first and then we try to build relationships. This behavior, however, alters the meaning of faith.

The speaker pointed out that we cannot interpret the will of God with our own strengths. The answer to the trials is trust, prayer, expectation, which only faith can bear in our hearts. It is the love that is left and does not require anything. This road cannot only be psychological. It passes through the Church, but not of certainty, of fanaticism, of absoluteness, but of the understanding of human anxiety, of a holiness not of superhuman, but of ordinary and everyday who take their cross and are left to the mercy of God.

Father Charalambos also underlined that today we are living a spirit of alienation, because our theology has been influenced by Western platitudes, which basically speak of a God that gives magical solutions to all human problems, does not allow us to risk compromising a relationship. A risk that enables us to have a course of true joy in the relationship with Christ. If you start from such a risk, then you can meet God everywhere. Our times demand from the Church to enter into the lives of people in the perspective of Holiness. Holiness is the one that really changes the world and transforms it, not the ready recipes, as we unfortunately expect and demand. We have to see things as they are and not as we think they are. Today we lack the deepening of the truth, which surely passes through the pain. Christ did not set us a pleasant life. He showed us a race that we can do little, but he asks us to trust Him and fight Him.

Then Mr. Charalambos answered questions from the participants in the event, stressing that trust in God does not remove our personal responsibility to fight, “to dig in the desert to find water” and when Christ finds that we can not, then He offers us what we lack.

Lastly, the Cultural Center Hall was packed and greeting was given by the Chair of the Union of Christian Scientists Mrs. Irene Malacha, who welcomed the speaker.
